Fourth graders are doing an awesome job getting into the school year. Assessments are completed and we are in the process of setting up guided reading groups. We have been working on author studies, shared reading, and genres of literature. The focus has been on drawing inferences using contextual clues and making predictions throughout reading. We have done studies of using glossaries, indexes and captions as well as proper use of the dictionary.
In writing our emphasis is on capitalization, punctuation and paragraph writing. Your help is extrememly important in their daily writing. Please make sure before you sign their writing notebooks that you check for these major things. Many students are coming with no capitalization used or end punctuation. We need to reinforce these skills in all areas including the home writing. Students will do this on their own if they are used to doing it from the beginning. We are doing our first writing sample now in class and results will be shared with you at conference time.
We have completed unit one in math which was geometry. In unit two the secured goals involve place value and reading numbers correctly. Please make sure that your child is working on basic math fact memorization at home. The students should have all their addition, subtraction, mulitiplication and division facts memorized so that new math skills become easier to learn. We will share more information about their assessments in math at conference time.
